Welcome. UMF has earned a national
reputation for preparing highly qualified teachers. Education of the whole child -
socially and emotionally as well as intellectually - and extensive experience in
children's settings are hallmarks of UMF's Early Childhood and Elementary Education
programs. You've come to the right place!
Early Childhood Degree Program
Students interested in working with young
children in child care centers, child care homes, nursery schools, or preschool
programs can pursue a B.S.
in Early Childhood Education: Preschool Option. This program prepares students for positions as
directors and teachers in public and private programs for young children. Students engage
in early and continual practical experience in a variety of classroom settings.
Students can also pursue a B.S.
in Early Childhood Education: K-3 Option. This program
gives students a strong foundation for work with preschool children as
well as a K-3 teaching certificate.
Elementary Education Degree
Program
Students interested in working with children in
public school settings can pursue a B.S. in
Elementary Education which leads to a K-8 endorsement. Students must complete a
24 hour concentration in arts and sciences as part of their program. UMF is accredited by the
National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Therefore, graduates
may generally become fully certified in other states. In addition, Maine participates in a
program that can lead, in many fields, to a Northeast Regional Credential, which will
allow individuals holding specific Maine endorsements to be immediately eligible for
employment in other New England states.

and certification for teacher educators, contact the Maine Department of Education.
